SAY, TELL, TALK and SPEAK

Some of you had some problems with the verbs SAY,  TELL, TALK and SPEAK . I hope this notes and this short video can help you to understand them.

1) You should learn to speak better English.

SAY a word, a name, a sentence SAY that… SAY something to somebody He SAID, ‘………………..’	TELL somebody that… TELL somebody to do something… TELL the truth, lies, a story, the time, fortunes … TELL somebody how to do something
TALK to somebody TALK about something	SPEAK to somebody SPEAK well/badly SPEAK French / Japanese…

Cardinal numbers

Digits (units) 0 - zero 1 – one 2 – two 3 – three 4 – four 5 – five 6 – six 7 – seven 8 – eight 9 – nine	Numbers (10+) 10 – ten 11 – eleven 12 – twelve 13 – thirteen 14 – fourteen 15 – fifteen 16 – sixteen 17 – seventeen 18 – eighteen 19 – nineteen	Tens (20+) 20 – twenty 30 – thirty 40 – forty 50 – fifty 60 – sixty 70 – seventy 80 – eighty 90 – ninety	Composed numbers ex : 21= 20+1 = twenty-one 22 – twenty-two 23 – twenty-three 24 – twenty-three ...... Hundreds 100 –  a hundred       –  one hundred 200 – two hundred 300 – three hundred .
Remember!          Put a hayphen (-) between tens and units                 ex : 39 =30 + 9   thirty-nine          Write “and” between hundreds and tens/units         ex : 206 =200 + 6                   two hundred and six			Thousands and more... 1,000 – a thousand          - one thousand 2,000 – two thousand 10,000 – ten thousand 11,000 – eleven thousand 12,000 – twelve thousand 100,000 – a hundred                 thousand 1,000,000 – one million...

How to write the date in English

There are several different ways to write the date in English. There are some differences between British and American English. Have a look at this :

	British: Day-Month-Year	American: Month-Day-Year
a.	the Fourteenth of March, 2011	March the Fourteenth, 2011
b.	14th March 2011	March 14th, 2011
c.	14 March 2011	March 14, 2011
d.	14/3/2011	3/14/2011
e.	14/3/11	3/14/11
f.	14/03/11	03/14/11

Note:  The longer formats, such as b or c, are more polite (they show more respect for the reader). Shorter formats, such as d. or e., are used in less formal situations, a letter between friends or an impersonal business letter. Format f. is rather official  for technical documents. Format a. is extremely formal and mainly used on printed items, for example a wedding invitation. The numerical formats may use a full stop (.) or hyphen (-) instead of a slash (/), for example: 14.3.2011 or 03-14-11
